A Mom's Guide To Dealing With Chickenpox

As all Mommies know, chickenpox is something that almost every child will get at some point in their life. And, strangely, it is something that most of us mommies want our children to get - chicken pox is much safer if caught in childhood than if caught later in life.

That being said, it can be very upsetting to see your little one in pain and discomfort from the blisters. However, there are plenty of things you can do to help make your child as comfortable as possible when they have chicken pox.

To find out more, have a read of our handy guide below:

1. Keep them cool

Don’t let your little one get too hot, as this will make the spots feel more itchy. Every parent knows that itching chicken pox spots is a big no-no, as this can cause scarring, which is not something you want for your child.

2. Clothed or naked?

Some parents swear by keeping their kids naked when they have chicken pox to help keep them cool while others prefer to keep them covered so that they can’t itch. What you choose to do is up to you - whatever makes your child most comfortable is the best bet.

If you do choose to keep your child covered, opt for clothing that is made of cotton, as wool and nylon can cause irritation and increase the need to itch. If you find that you struggle to stop your child itching, you could invest in ScratchSleeves. These are fantastic for preventing your little ones from itching and making their spots worse.

3. Antihistamines are your best friend

One of the best ways to keep itching at bay is with antihistamines, like Piriton. Give your child a dose of Piriton in the morning before they get up and in the evening just before bed. This should help to keep the itching down to a minimum.

4. Tepid baths are great

If your child starts to feel sore, pop them in a tepid bath and gently sponge them down. This should help to reduce the pain and make them feel better.

Once you have got them out of the bath, gently pat them dry with a soft towel and apply calamine lotion to their spots with cotton wool. This is fantastic for soothing and taking away the itchiness.

5. Let them eat what they want

If your child has spots in their throat, they may not feel like eating. Don’t push them, as it could make them feel worse. Instead, offer them ice lollies, yogurt, soup and smoothies, or anything else that they fancy.

6. Give them lots of cuddles

The chickenpox virus can take all your child's energy, so don’t expect them to be back to their old self quickly. It can take up to a month for your child to feel back to their old self.

While they feel unwell, spend extra time with them and give them lots of cuddles. Make them as comfortable as possible and give them all the attention they need.
