Easing Caregiver Stress

The majority of caregivers are women. Many of them are trying to fulfill the roles of wife, mother, caregiver and employee. With all of those responsibilities, burn-out and total exhaustion is bound to occur. There are several things you can do to ease the stress a caregiver often experiences.

Have a Family Meeting
Trying to be superwoman is a sure way to over-extend yourself. It’s essential that you take care of yourself so that you can take care of your family. Taking on too much is detrimental to your physical and emotional health. Get the whole family together to discuss how being a caregiver affects the daily routine. Divide some of the household duties with your spouse and kids. If your elderly relative has or will be moving in with you, discuss the changes that will occur in the daily routine and overall family dynamics.

Get Some Help
If you have family members that can assist with caregiving duties, ask them to help you out. Check out day programs that are designed to care for seniors for a few hours a day. You can turn to caregiver agency Norwalk ct to arrange to have a professional caregiver come into your parent’s home, or your home if they’re living with you, and care for your family member. You can also have a therapist or CNA do in-home care. Having a professional caregiver come to your parent’s home will free up some of your time. While you may be tempted to use that time to hurry around and do a multitude of other chores, that’s not the best way to use the time you have to step out of the caregiver role. Use that time to get some much-needed rest, make a date with your spouse, spend some one-on-one time with your children or enjoy a family activity.

As a caregiver, you have to find balance in your life or you may find yourself getting overly stress and physically ill. Never feel as if you have to travel this part of your journey alone.
