School is out for the weekend. But what should you do with the little ones? It’s time to come up with some fun and creative ways to keep your little monsters entertained for the next couple of days.

Of course, there is weekend homework to do, but it is still important to plan fun activities for the rest of the weekend. Otherwise, your child may end up plopping in front of the television or computer screen and staying there all weekend.

To help you plan fun activities that kids of all ages will enjoy, we have put together a handy guide below.

1. Go for a picnic

If the weather is warm and sunny, why not go for a picnic? Pack up a hamper of sandwiches, sausage rolls and cupcakes and head off to the park for an afternoon of picnic fun.

Don’t forget to take along a football for a kick about and some other toys and games to keep the little ones entertained. You could also consider inviting some family or friends with similar aged children to your along. This will give them a play buddy and you someone to natter to.

If the weather is horrible, there is no reason you have to cancel your picnic. Instead, spread out your picnic blanket on your living room floor and enjoy an indoor picnic instead. You could even invite the teddy bears to join you.

2. Bake

If your kids enjoy baking, then why not spend a weekend afternoon having a baking session with them. Ask your children what they fancy baking - things like cakes, cookies, bread and homemade pizzas seem to be popular choices.

What you bake may depend on how old your children are and how involved they can get. For example, toddlers and young children will love stirring the bowl and decorating their creations afterwards. While older children will want to help in every stage of the bake.

3. Create a mini herb or vegetable garden

To encourage your little ones to spend time outside, spend an afternoon or morning creating a mini herb or vegetable garden with them.

All you will need are a couple of large wooden planter boxes, some good-quality earth and a few different packets of seeds. Before buying the seeds, ask your children what vegetables and herbs they would like to grow - what is their favourite?

Before planting the seeds, help your child to read up on the care that each herb or vegetable you are planting will need.

4. Make a nature collage

Go for a nature walk to your local park or nature area and help your child to collect items for their collage. Point things out to them like fallen leaves, flowers, pine cones, etc. and collect one or two samples of each in a bag.

Once you have everything you need, go home and get creative. Set your little one up with a piece of card, safety scissors, glue dots, paints, and anything else that they might need. As they are creating their nature collage, talk to them about each item they are using, like a leaf for example, and explain to them where it comes from.

5. Build a den

If the weather is bad and you are at a loss as to how to keep the kids entertained, why not help them to build a den? Kids love dens; they are fun and exciting, and best of all, can keep them happy for hours.

Use chairs, tables and old sheets and blankets to construct a den for your little ones. On the floor of the den place pillows and throws for them to play on.
