Reading Strategies for Children

The world of education is constantly changing. As advances continue to be made in many different sectors, tools for children to learn continue to grow and change as well. It wasn't always the case, but in this modern era, there are many fantastic tools and strategies to assist children at various reading levels and with unique learning challenges. From ASL strategies to braille cards and many things in between, there's something for everyone.

Reading Games

When a child is at the point where they seem ready to become a more active participant in a bedtime reading routine or reading in the classroom, reading games can make the process more accessible. There are ways to have fun with letters, familiarize a child with the letters in their own name, or create games around letter sounds. Similarly, reading a story can be an interactive experience. Engage a child's imagination by asking how they think the story might end. This positive association with the process of reading can be important and formative.

Reading Aloud

Almost all experts would agree that reading aloud to a child is the best way to get a child ready to read. Even if a child is hard of hearing (or fully deaf), they can still benefit from the experience of story time, at home and at school. Books with larger print, acting out parts of the story, and read-along devices are all great ways to make the communal experience of story time more accessible to students that have different hearing abilities. For children with vision problems, reading aloud is again a great way to help bring the story to life for the imagination, especially if a child is still learning braille.

Special Tools

There are many other unique tools for students facing different challenges. Assistive technology, like text-to-speech devices, grows every day. Keep an eye on the horizon for all the great things coming around the corner to help continue children of all types on their reading journeys.
