Should You Do Your Own Pest Control?

Is DIY Pest Control A Good Idea?

Having pests as house mates is no fun. Whether termites are eating away at your woodwork, flies are spreading disease or mice are gnawing through electricity cables, you need to seek an answer to the problem as soon as possible. The problem is not going to go away if you take no action.

You may decide that calling a professional exterminator is the best idea. However, you may prefer to try some DIY pest control first. There are some common methods that you can use to try and deal with the issue yourself.

Diatomaceous Earth
Diatomaceous Earth has many different uses, including being utilized as a dietary supplement. One of the other uses is the removal of insects from your home. It scratches the exoskeletons of insects and the damage causes the affected insect to dehydrate and die. You can spread Diatomaceous Earth around areas in your home where insects appear to be a problem.

Nematodes
These microscopic worms are commonly used by keen gardeners to deal with the pests that damage flowers and vegetables. They can also be put to use in killing termites. This is an important task as termites can seriously undermine the wooden structures of your home if they are not dealt with. You can end up with an unwelcome repair bill for thousands of dollars.

Soapy warm water
You may be wondering how much use simple soap and water can be when dealing with a pest problem. The truth is that it can be useful in dealing with a moderate fly or ant problem but you may struggle to control a major issue in this way. If you want to try this method of DIY pest control simply add the soap and water to a spray bottle, aim it at the pests and spray.

Mint leaves
As with Diatomaceous Earth, mint leaves provide several health benefits. These benefits include alleviating digestion issues and helping to improve the condition of skin. The leaves can also be used to deter cockroaches, ants and flies from entering your home. These insects stay away from mint.

Mouse traps
Mouse traps are one of the most common forms of DIY pest control. If you are going to use them in your home, do not just place them randomly. You should look for signs of where the mice are, including mouse droppings, urine stains and evidence of chewing. Once you have identified the area where the mice are spending most of their time, you should set the traps accordingly.

DIY pest control can be effective on some occasions. However, it's not guaranteed to work. If you believe that there is a pest problem in your home, it's often a better idea to get further advice about pest control. You can get expert support with the problem which can help you to make sure that it's dealt with quickly and effectively, returning your home to its pest free condition while protecting your family and your furnishings in the process.
