5 Steps To A Healthy Heart

It’s no secret that the heart is one of the most important organs of the body. It’s role is to pump blood around the body, carrying oxygen and nutrients to tissues in the body, all while removing carbon dioxide from the blood too. Without the function of our hearts, living simply wouldn’t be possible, so that’s why it’s imperative that you look after your heart. Not sure how to keep your heart as healthy as possible? Check out our 5 steps to a healthy heart!

Don’t smoke
We don’t need to lecture you as to why smoking is bad for you, but did you know that when you smoke, the rubbish and chemicals enter your bloodstream and starve your body from precious oxygen? Not to mention the damage smoking does to your lungs! Quit smoking for the benefit of your heart, lungs, wallet, and those around you.

Know when something is wrong
The human body is pretty good at picking up when something isn’t right, and it’s important to be able to tell when there isn’t something right with your heart. While many minor things can cause our hearts to flutter or ‘skip a beat’ such as anxiety or excitement, it’s imperative to have your heart checked out if it becomes a regular or even painful occurrence. Your Doctor may simply listen to your heart, or they may even send you for a heart ct scan to look deeper into your issue..

Lose weight
Our bodies depend highly on the strength and function of our hearts, and when you’re overweight you’re putting extreme pressure on your heart. This is because your heart needs to work harder to ensure that the blood gets to the right place. Losing weight can help your heart grow stronger and prolong your life.

Eat healthy foods
As mentioned earlier, the heart pumps blood and nutrients around the body that are absorbed in and used to keep up healthy. Eating healthier food will prevent your heart from having to work as hard to get the nutrients around your body. Not only that, you may find that your waistline is trimmer and you’re more alert too.

Exercise
Finally, to keep the heart as healthy as possible, it’s important to give it regular ‘workouts’. When we exercise, it’s not just our bodies that benefit from the muscle strength - it’s out hearts too! Exercise more often! You know you’re exercising correctly when your heart rate is high enough to feel out of breath and you’re beginning to sweat. Do this for 30 minutes at least three times a week and your heart will grow stronger each time!
